I am setting up a new computer.

Having trouble with outlook. I have changed passwords and everytime it will not accept them.

For verification they want to send a text to a phone number I no longer have.

How can I correct this I have already spent 5 hours trying to change.

    Hi, @Gregory Pettit

This forum is public, no one from here has access to your Microsoft account.

If you haven't already, I suggest resetting the password, choosing the "I don't have any of these" option, and continuing with the form.

To reset your password, please follow these steps:

    • Go to the Microsoft account recovery page: https://account.live.com/password/reset
    • Select "I forgot my password", then click Next.
    • Enter the email address or phone number linked to your Microsoft account and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If you don’t have access to any of the recovery options listed, click on “I don’t have any of these” and fill out the form as accurately as possible. Microsoft uses that information to verify your identity.

If you have any further questions or concerns please let me know.

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

    Hello @Gregory Pettit

Sometimes Outlook requires an application‑specific password. Even if you enter your regular account password correctly, Outlook may not accept it. For example, Gmail provides application‑specific passwords that you need to generate and use in place of your normal password when connecting Outlook. This extra step ensures secure access for third‑party apps while keeping your main account credentials protected.

For Example: An application‑specific password is a one‑time password generated by your email provider (like Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud). It’s used when a program (such as Outlook) doesn’t support modern two‑factor authentication. Instead of your usual password, you enter this special password in Outlook to allow it to connect securely.

If you could help us with your name of your ISP we would be happy to get this fixed for you.

If the account is asking for a verification text to a phone number that is no longer available, replace the security info instead of continuing to retry sign-in.

    1. Start signing in to the Microsoft account.
    2. At the Verify your identity prompt, select I don't have any of these.
    3. Follow the prompts to replace the old phone number or other security info.
    4. If access still exists to at least one current verification method, sign in to Security and select Manage how I sign in or Update info, then add a new way to sign in or verify.
    5. After the new method is confirmed, remove the old phone number.

    Important points:

    • If access has been lost to all security info, replacing it triggers a 30-day wait before sign-in is allowed again.
    • Do not change all security info at the same time unless necessary, because that can restrict the account for 30 days.
    • If verification codes are not arriving, avoid repeated requests because that can temporarily block code delivery.
    • Check the junk folder for verification emails. Valid codes come from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.

For the Outlook password problem on the new computer:

    • If the Microsoft account password was changed recently, Outlook may still be using the old saved password.
    • In classic Outlook on Windows, open Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts > select the account > Change, then verify the User Name is the full email address and update the password.
    • If adding the account again, use Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts > New and complete setup with the current password.
    • If using an IMAP account in classic Outlook, make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.

If the account keeps rejecting the password during sign-in and also keeps forcing verification to an old method, the account security information must be updated first. Continuing to reset the password alone will not fix the outdated verification method.
