cannot save an Excel file

After I have entered information into my Excel file, I cannot save it before closing it.

Hi,

I see that you selected Windows as your category, but this is a known issue for Mac users. To be sure, are you using Windows or macOS?

If you are using Windows, open any Office app (Word, Excel, etc.), sign out of your account, and then sign back in using the correct Microsoft account to refresh the license.

If the issue persists, type Control Panel in the search bar, then go to Programs and Features > Microsoft 365/Office > right-click > Change, and run Online Repair.

If the issue still persists, go to: https://account.microsoft.com/services

Can you confirm if your license or subscription appears there and is listed as active?

Try these in order:

1. Save with a new file name
   • In Excel, select File > Save As.
   • Save the workbook with a unique new name.
2. Save to a different location
   • Try saving to another location such as the local hard disk, a network drive, or a removable drive.
   • If the file saves elsewhere, the original location may have a permissions, connection, or media problem.
3. Check folder permissions
   • Excel needs Read, Write, Modify, and Delete permissions on the destination folder.
   • If the file is read-only or the location is a network or external drive, a failed connection can also prevent saving.
4. Check free disk space
   • If the destination drive is full, Excel cannot complete the save operation.
5. Test for antivirus interference
   • Temporarily deactivate antivirus software, then try saving again.
   • Antivirus can interrupt Excel while it creates and renames its temporary save file.
6. Try Excel Safe Mode
   • Exit Excel.
   • Select Start, point to Programs.
   • As Excel starts, press and hold Ctrl until prompted to start in safe mode.
   • Select Yes.
   • Open a new workbook and try to save it, then try the problem file.
   • If saving works in Safe Mode, a third-party add-in or startup file is likely causing the problem.
7. Check file path length
   • If the full path and file name exceed 218 characters, Excel may show Filename is not valid and fail to save.
8. If the workbook still will not save
   • Move the worksheets to a new workbook:
     1. Press Shift+F11 to add a filler worksheet.
     2. Select the first sheet, hold Shift, and select the last sheet to group them, excluding the filler sheet.
     3. Right-select the grouped sheets, then select Move or copy.
     4. In To Book, select (New Book).
     5. Select OK.
   • Or save the file as a different Excel file type using File > Save As and choose another format such as .xlsx or .xlsm.

Excel saves by writing to a temporary file in the destination folder, deleting the original file, and then renaming the temporary file. Anything that interrupts that process, such as permissions, disk space, antivirus, add-ins, or connection issues, can stop the save.
