Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server Stuck in Dropping State

We are experiencing an issue with our Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server.

The server is currently showing the status “Dropping” in the Azure Portal and has not completed the deletion process.
We tried from cli but it says dosent exist. From portal its stucked on dropping state for longer time.

Please help me to resolve this issue.

Based on your description, the Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server appears to be stuck in the "Dropping" state. This can occur when the deletion operation does not complete successfully and the Azure Resource Provider metadata becomes temporarily inconsistent.

Please try the following checks:

Review the Activity Log for the PostgreSQL Flexible Server and verify whether the delete operation shows any failure details.

Confirm whether the server still appears under the resource group resources list.

If Azure CLI returns that the resource does not exist while the Azure portal still shows it as Dropping, this may indicate a backend synchronization issue where the delete operation is stuck in the platform layer.

Wait for some time and refresh the portal to see whether the resource state is updated.

If the server has remained in the Dropping state for an extended period and CLI continues to report that the resource does not exist, please share the following information so that further investigation can be performed:

Subscription ID

Resource Group Name

PostgreSQL Flexible Server Name

Azure Region

Approximate time when the delete operation was initiated

Screenshot of the server status showing Dropping

Any Activity Log entries related to the delete operation

In some cases, backend intervention may be required to clear the orphaned resource record and complete the deletion.

Hi Sanchit,

Recently had this occur and I solved it by deleting the resource group that contained the PostgreSQL Flexible Server. Please give this a try if you haven't already (I'm assuming there aren't other resources in the resource group you need to keep).

I had deleted the PostgreSQL server, it did not show via CLI or subscription -- Resources, but still showed in the resource group in portal, and if I went to Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible servers it was showing there as Dropping. After deleting the resource group the server was finally gone.
