Look at the function keys (F1 - F12) on your keyboard, if one of them has a camera icon, press that key or Fn + that key to unlock the webcam.

    2

If that was not the problem, look at the camera lens above your screen, is there a small privacy slider that needs to be opened to access the webcam?

    3

If the webcam is still not working, go to the support page for your laptop on the manufacturers website, then from there, download and re-install the version of webcam drivers they provide.

If you have any difficulty locating that support page, click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

    Try these checks in order:

    1. Check for a physical camera shutter or privacy switch.
      • Many laptops have a small slider near the webcam that blocks the camera.
      • If it is closed, open it.
    2. Check for a keyboard camera key.
      • Look at the function keys for a camera icon.
      • Press that key, or press Fn + that key, to turn the camera back on.
    3. Verify Windows camera privacy settings.
      • Open Settings.
      • Go to Privacy & security > Camera.
      • Turn on Camera access.
      • Turn on Let apps access your camera.
      • If needed, also allow the specific app that is trying to show the preview.
    4. Test the camera in the built-in Camera app.
      • If the Camera app also shows a gray image, lock icon, or privacy screen, the issue is likely a hardware privacy mode or device setting outside the app.
    5. Close other apps that may be using the webcam.
      • If another app has exclusive control of the camera, preview can fail.
      • Close video apps, browsers, virtual camera tools, or messaging apps, then try again.
    6. Reinstall the camera driver.
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Find the camera device.
      • Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
      • Then use Action > Scan for hardware changes.
      • If the camera still does not work, install the webcam driver from the PC manufacturer’s support page.

If the preview is specifically failing inside an app, Windows can also block camera access at the system level, and some devices have a manufacturer privacy mode that must be turned off before preview will work.
