For a child Microsoft account, password reset still has to go through the normal Microsoft account recovery process.
- On the Microsoft account sign-in page, select Forgot password?
- Enter the account username and select Next.
- Choose a verification method and select Next.
- Enter the verification code that was sent.
- Type a new password and select Next.
If the account has very little activity and the verification options are limited, use the Sign-in Helper first. If that does not work, use the Microsoft account recovery form.
Important limits:
- If two-step verification is turned on and there is no access to any alternate verification methods, support cannot help reset the account.
- Microsoft support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or access and change account details.
- If the recovery form is used, Microsoft reviews the answers and responds within 24 hours.
- If the account is not verified, the recovery form can be retried up to two times per day.
For the recovery form:
- Use a working email address that can receive updates about the recovery request.
- Fill in as much accurate account information as possible.
- If the account is verified, instructions to sign back in are sent to that working email.
If the password is actually known and only needs to be changed, go to https://account.microsoft.com/security and select Change password.
