Hi All, I would like to downgrade from Family to Single 365 subcription. Could I buy my single product key from my local supplier and add it to my account under this URL: https://setup.office.com/?ms.officeurl=setup&ref=accountportal

Do I need to change or cancel my current subscription then or does it automatically switch to the single subcription when I add the product key?

Thanks

Upgrading from one version of Microsoft 365 like going form the Personal version to the Family version can be easily done by just adding the new subscription, however, you are switching to a version of Microsoft 365 with fewer features (Family to Personal), so that will not work.

You need to cancel the existing Microsoft 365 Family subscription and disable recurring billing on the subscription, then wait for that to expire before starting the new subscription and yes, you can purchase the new subscription code form your local retailer and add the product key to your account on this link: https://setup.office.com/Home?wa=wsignin1.0

Provided you use the exact same Microsoft account for the new subscription, you will still have access to all your files and the same 1TB of OneDrive storage on OneDrive.

To move from Microsoft 365 Family to Microsoft 365 Personal for home use:

    • Adding a different subscription to the same Microsoft account usually switches the account to the new subscription.
    • If a Microsoft 365 Personal product key is applied to an account that currently has Microsoft 365 Family, there is a choice to stay with Microsoft 365 Family or convert to Microsoft 365 Personal.
    • The account can have only one active Microsoft 365 subscription at a time.

If switching to a plan with fewer features, the supported path is:

    1. Sign in to the Subscriptions page at https://account.microsoft.com/services with the Microsoft account tied to the current subscription.
    2. Find the current Microsoft 365 Family subscription and select Manage > Cancel subscription.
    3. Follow the prompts to switch to the lower plan.
    4. The current subscription usually continues until it expires, and the new lower plan takes effect at renewal.

If the Personal key is bought from a local supplier, it must be redeemed using the same Microsoft account as the current subscription. When applying a Personal key to a Family subscription, the choice to stay on Family or convert to Personal is presented.

If an accidental switch happens, contact Microsoft Support.
