If Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are not opening on Windows, use this order:

1. Update Office
   • Open any Office app if possible.
   • Go to File > Account.
   • Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
2. Start the app in Safe Mode to check whether an add-in is causing the problem:
   • Excel: excel /safe
   • Word: winword /safe
   • PowerPoint: powerpnt /safe
   • Press Windows key + R, type the command, then press Enter.
   • If the app opens, the title bar should show Safe Mode.
3. Disable add-ins if the app opens in Safe Mode:
   • In the Office app, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
   • In Manage, select the app add-ins or COM Add-ins, then select Go.
   • Clear one add-in, select OK, then restart the app normally.
   • Repeat until the problem add-in is found.
   • Older add-ins specifically called out as problematic include Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord, and Dragon Naturally Speaking.
4. Repair Office if the app does not open in Safe Mode, or if file opening is broken:
   • Open Control Panel.
   • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
   • Select the Office product.
   • Select Change.
   • Choose Quick Repair and then Repair.
5. If double-clicking Office files opens the wrong app or fails, manually set file associations:
   • Open Control Panel.
   • Go to Programs > Default Programs.
   • Under Set a default for a file type or link type, choose the file type and assign the correct Office app.
6. If a specific document is corrupted, try Open and Repair:
   • In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, select File > Open > Browse.
   • Select the file.
   • Select the arrow next to Open.
   • Select Open and Repair.

If Office apps still do not start after Safe Mode and Quick Repair, the documented next steps are to repair Office again or uninstall and reinstall it, and make sure the latest device drivers are installed.
