Question

A ew Laptop I bought where Win11 was pre installed and start menu button and taskbar stopped working. I tried the fix found in Internet but did not work. How do I reinstall clean windows image?

Hello,

If you're trying to reinstall Windows, you have three options. You can reinstall Windows from Settings, using an ISO, or with a USB. All three options will reinstall Windows, but one requires a USB, the others don't.

To reinstall Windows from within Settings, open it, and then navigate to System > Recovery > Reset this PC. You can select to either keep your files and apps or remove everything. Then, you will be asked if you want to do a cloud reinstall or a local reinstall. If you have a strong network connection, I recommend going with the cloud reinstall. However, if you have a metered network connection or have OEM specific apps that you would like to keep, go with the local reinstall.

To reinstall Windows using the ISO, go to https://microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 and then scroll down to where you see "Download Windows 11 Disc Image for x64 devices". Select your language, and then download the ISO. This ISO will be about 7 GB, so depending on your Internet connection speed, it will take a while. Again, if you have a metered connection, you will want to go with the local reinstall from within Settings. Once the ISO is done downloading, open the ISO (mount it), and then open setup.exe. If you see a prompt for User Account Control, simply click "Yes". Let Windows Setup load in, and then when you are asked to check if the settings are correct, select "Change what to keep", and then select the option that you will like. Then, click "Next", then "Install", which will start the install process.

In both the steps mentioned, make sure that your laptop is plugged into a power source so that it won't die during the reset process. Check on your laptop to see if the laptop manufacturer provides a method to perform a Factory Restore, that would be the best image to restore your system from, it would include a full Windows installation along with the recommended drivers and pre-installed OEM software.

If you cannot find that, what is the make (Dell, Lenovo, Asus... etc.) of your laptop.

If there is no manufacturers factory recovery option:

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.

Please try each option one at a time, then see if Windows will boot to a stable system.

If there is an option to uninstall the latest update, that may be the best option.

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore

Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

If the above fails to result in a stable system, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Reset this PC

Choose to keep your files and apps, just your files or to keep nothing

Then start the Reset
