Lost emails

Question

I've lost all emails in my inbox going back 20-odd years except for emails from the last few months. All emails in folders and Sent Items are still there. I already checked the Junk Mail and Deleted files folders. Is there anyway to find these lost emails?

Since Junk Email and Deleted Items were already checked, the next Outlook.com checks are:

1. In Deleted Items, select Recover items deleted from this folder at the top of the message list.
   • If the missing inbox messages appear there, select them and choose Restore.
   • In Outlook.com, messages removed from Deleted Items are recoverable for 30 days.
2. Check whether the inbox view is hiding messages:
   • In Inbox, select Filter above the message list and choose All.
   • If Focused Inbox is enabled, check the Other tab.
3. Check whether messages were moved by a rule:
   • Go to Rules settings and review any Inbox or Sweep rules that could be moving mail out of Inbox.
   • Rules can only be viewed and edited on a computer.
4. Search outside Inbox:
   • Search for a known sender or subject and check whether the messages are now in another folder such as Archive or a custom folder.
5. If Outlook.com is emptying deleted mail on sign-out, turn that off:
   • Go to Settings > Message handling.
   • Under When signing out, clear Empty my deleted items folder.

Important limits:

• Messages in Junk Email are automatically removed after 30 days and aren’t recoverable.
• If the missing messages are not in Recover items deleted from this folder, they were likely moved elsewhere or permanently removed and can’t be recovered through Outlook.com self-service.
