A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If the sign-in keeps asking for Microsoft Authenticator after reinstalling the app, the immediate checks are:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator and make sure the app is unlocked and responsive.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator from the device app store.
- Make sure notifications are enabled for the app.
- Check network connectivity by switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Verify the device date and time are correct.
- Restart the device.
- If using VPN, disconnect it and try again.
If email codes arrive but sign-in still requires Authenticator, use another available verification option during sign-in if one is offered, such as a different email or SMS method.
If this is a personal Microsoft account and the Authenticator loop prevents access, use the official account recovery path:
- Try other sign-in methods if available.
- If access to the registered security methods is lost, select I don't have any of these when prompted and follow the recovery steps.
- If the account uses another Microsoft email address to receive the code, use two private/incognito browser windows so both accounts stay signed in at the same time while retrieving the code.
If this is a work or school account and Authenticator was reinstalled so the registered MFA method is no longer available, the MFA method typically needs to be reset by the organization’s IT admin or helpdesk so Authenticator can be registered again.
If the issue continues, send logs from Authenticator for diagnostics: open the app, go to the top-level menu, and select Send feedback.
