I am reporting a persistent issue with Microsoft Word (Microsoft 365 Family) where the “Upgrade your plan” banner appears in the title bar despite having an active subscription valid until September 2027.
Over the last two hours, with the help of Microsoft Copilot, I performed deep troubleshooting far beyond normal support steps. The banner disappears temporarily after each reset, then resurrects as soon as Word reconnects to Microsoft’s cloud. This strongly indicates server‑side subscription metadata corruption, not a client‑side issue.
Here is everything we tried:
Deleted Office activation tokens
Deleted Office WebView2 profiles
Deleted the entire WEF subsystem
Reinstalled Microsoft 365 from the official portal
Cleared identity tokens
Reset Office caches
Rebooted Windows
Verified subscription status in Microsoft Account and Windows Settings
Every single reset hides the banner once, then it returns on the next launch. This is the exact signature of incorrect cloud metadata being pushed down to the client.
There are multiple complaints about this issue since June 2026, and it is now late August with no fix. Even reinstalling the latest Office 365 (English version) does not resolve it.
This is not a local configuration problem. This is not a licensing token problem. This is not a WebView2 problem. This is not a WEF problem. This is not an identity problem. This is server‑side subscription metadata incorrectly flagging fully paid users.
Please escalate this to the Microsoft 365 engineering team. The upsell banner is misleading and disruptive for users who have paid years in advance, and from what I can searching similar questions, it seems your engineering team just don't care, which is unacceptable.
