1. Try signing in to the Microsoft account at Sign in to request a security code.
2. Use any phone number that can receive text messages. It does not need to be linked to the account, and it does not need to be a smartphone.
3. Enter the security code online. The code expires after 10 minutes.
4. If prompted, create a new password.
5. If the code does not arrive, start with the online unlock flow again and check that the numbers entered are from the body of the message, not the header.
6. If a message says the phone number usage limit was exceeded, stop repeated attempts. Wait before trying again. Temporary blocks can clear after 24 hours, and in some cases up to 1 week.
7. If blocked on one verification method, try another method connected to the account, or try another network such as switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular.
