A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If this is a work or school account, there is usually no self-service fix when the only sign-in method is Microsoft Authenticator and the app is no longer accessible. The account’s IT admin or helpdesk must reset the MFA/authentication methods so Authenticator can be set up again.
If this is a personal Microsoft account, try these steps first:
- On the sign-in page, select Other ways to sign in.
- If available, select Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app only if the app can still open and show the prompt.
- In Authenticator, make sure the app is unlocked. If the app is locked, the approval number box might not appear.
- Make sure notifications are enabled for Authenticator.
- Update Authenticator to the latest version.
- Check network connectivity. Try switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Make sure the device date and time are correct.
- If sign-in still fails, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper or reset the password if needed.
If the app shows restored accounts with Action required:
- Open Authenticator.
- On the Accounts screen, tap the affected account.
- Tap the account tile.
- Tap the option to sign in to recover.
- Enter the password, then confirm the email address or phone number if prompted.
If the issue is specifically “Authentication did not complete”:
- Unlock the app.
- Enable notifications.
- Update the app.
- Check internet access.
- Correct date/time settings.
If this is a work or school account and the app is logged out or stuck in a loop after changing phones or losing access to the old device, the supported resolution is to contact the organization’s IT admin/helpdesk to reset MFA and require re-registration.
