Cursor Related Issues

Question

Ive noticed sometimes when I'm doing stuff my cursor would just slide down as if it were slipping downwards or something like that. It happens randomly, with or without a mouse, and on any surface I've used. Might be the sensor being dirty but I'm honestly not sure how to clean that.

Another issue I've noticed is that sometimes I could click once and something in the system acts like its being held down and it does that for a certain few seconds then stops (as if I'm trying to highlight text) which isn't what I'm trying to do.

When you say the problem happens with or without the mouse, do you mean with or without the mouse connected, or when you aren't using the mouse?

Does the problem occur with another mouse?

Try these checks in order:

1. Rule out a hardware problem
   • If this happens with both a mouse and no mouse connected, test the pointing device on another PC if possible.
   • For a USB mouse, unplug it, wait briefly, then plug it back in.
   • Try a different USB port.
   • If using a USB hub, remove it and connect the mouse directly to the PC.
   • Check for dirt blocking the mouse sensor or any keys/buttons, and make sure batteries are charged if the device is wireless.
2. If using wireless or Bluetooth
   • Reconnect the receiver by unplugging it for about 10 seconds and plugging it back in.
   • If the device has a Reset button on the mouse or USB receiver, use it to disconnect and reconnect the wireless connection.
   • For Bluetooth devices, low battery can also cause slow or incorrect input. Check battery level in Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
3. Adjust pointer behavior
   • Go to Start > Settings > Devices > Mouse > Additional mouse options > Pointer Options.
   • Adjust the pointer speed. This can help if the cursor seems to drift or move unpredictably.
4. If clicks act like they are being held down
   • Open Start > Settings > Devices > Mouse and review the mouse button settings.
   • Also check whether the device has dirt blocking buttons or sensors, since stuck input can come from the hardware.
5. Reduce interference from the system
   • Close open apps and test again. If performance improves, open apps may have been interfering with the connection.
   • Restart the PC to refresh drivers.
   • Install the latest Windows updates from Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
6. If the issue is from a laptop touchpad rather than an external mouse
   • Test with an external mouse. If the external mouse works normally while the touchpad still jumps, sticks, or drags selections, that points to a touchpad hardware issue.

If the device does not work correctly on another PC either, replacement may be needed.
