I am so frustrated. I was forced to use an authenticator app to sign in to my damn account. I no longer want to use this method or at least change it from being the default. How do I do this? I can't delete it and I can't find where to change it from being the default.

For a personal Microsoft account, there is no supported step here to set a different default sign-in verification method in the provided guidance.

    What is supported:

    1. Go to Security > Advanced security options in the Microsoft account dashboard.
    2. Under your verification methods, expand the authenticator-related entry and select Remove.
    3. Select Remove again to confirm.

    Important before removing it:

    • Add another verification method first, or there is a risk of losing access.
    • If all security info is removed, the account enters a 30-day restricted state. During that period, no further changes or additions can be made to security settings or billing information, although email, Skype, OneDrive, and devices remain usable.
    • If another method is already set up, the sign-in flow can use Sign in another way on the two-step verification page.

If the authenticator entry is tied to a lost or replaced phone, the documented path is:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard.
    2. Go to Security > Advanced security options.
    3. Under Ways to prove who you are, find Send sign-in notification with that device name.
    4. Expand it and select Remove.

If sign-in is blocked because the authenticator app cannot be used, use the Sign in another way option if another verification method was previously added.

Is this with regards to your Outlook account? In that case, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accounts-billing/manage/removing-a-sign-in-verification-method .

Any website can require users to authenticate ('prove their identity') as a condition of accessing the website, however no one is forced to use an authenticator app since there are other ways to authenticate. You can ask the website in question what other methods of authentication they will allow.
