    Amy-Anne,

Are you using personal Microsoft account in your case? What about the people are you sharing with, are they using personal account, or work/school/organizational accouns?

Are you using the in-app sharing feature? When you use the "Share" button, have you tried copy link option instead, does it allow you? If you send the link to the same people, does that work?

Also, if you go to Files tab, can you tell the actual/exact path it is saved to?

For OneNote on Windows, this sharing problem is commonly fixed based on where the notebook was created and stored.

If the error appears when sharing a notebook that is already on OneDrive, the usual cause is that the notebook was created by using File > New > Browse to a OneDrive location instead of creating it directly with the OneDrive option.

    Use the matching fix below:

    1. If the notebook has not been created yet
      • In OneNote 2016 for Windows, select File > New > OneDrive.
      • Create the notebook there.
      • Then share it from File > Share.
    2. If the notebook already exists
      • Open the notebook in OneNote 2016 for Windows.
      • Select File > Share.
      • When the message appears, select OneDrive, then Browse.
      • Create a new folder, or choose a different location in OneDrive that is not the notebook’s current location.
      • Select Move.
      • After the notebook location changes, try sharing again.

If the notebook is being shared from OneDrive or SharePoint and the error says organizational policies do not allow sharing, external sharing may be turned off. In that case, a SharePoint or Microsoft 365 admin must check:

    • Microsoft 365 admin center > Admin centers > SharePoint > Policies > Sharing
    • For OneDrive sharing: Admin centers > OneDrive > External sharing

If admin permissions are not available, the SharePoint administrator or Microsoft 365 administrator must make that change.
