Can't get new mouse to connect to my laptop. It is both blue tooth and 2.4G but won't connect wireless or with dongle.

    Hello John and Gayle Ashworth,

Could you share the exact brand and model of the mouse? Since it supports both Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz, the procedure for switching modes and pairing with its USB receiver can depend on the model.

Also, when you plug the 2.4 GHz receiver directly into the laptop, does anything new appear in Device Manager?

As a quick check, try the mouse and its receiver on another computer if possible. Microsoft recommends this as a way to determine whether the problem is with the mouse/receiver or the original PC.

Let me know the model and what happens with those two checks, and we can narrow this down.

Make sure the mouse is turned ON (check the switch on the bottom). Try a different USB port for the dongle (preferably a direct port on the laptop, not a hub).

If possible, test the mouse on another computer to confirm it isn’t faulty

    Try this in order:

    1. Check power and batteries
      • Make sure the mouse is turned on.
      • If it uses replaceable batteries, open the battery compartment and confirm the batteries are installed correctly. Replace them with fresh batteries if needed.
      • If it is rechargeable, charge it with the included USB cable.
    2. Test the 2.4 GHz dongle connection
      • Plug the USB receiver directly into a USB port on the laptop.
      • If it does not work, unplug it, wait about 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
      • Try a different USB port.
      • If a USB hub is being used, remove it and connect the receiver directly to the laptop.
    3. Test Bluetooth pairing
      • Put the mouse into pairing mode by pressing and holding its pairing button for 5–7 seconds until the light blinks.
      • In Windows, go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
      • Turn Bluetooth on.
      • Select Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
      • Select the mouse when it appears, then complete any prompts.
    4. If Bluetooth still does not connect
      • Turn Airplane mode on for 10–15 seconds, then turn it off.
      • Turn off other Bluetooth devices connected to the laptop, because too many Bluetooth devices can interfere.
      • Remove the mouse from the Bluetooth device list and pair it again.
    5. Check whether the mouse is already paired somewhere else
      • If the pairing light flashes three times and then turns off, the mouse is already paired to another nearby PC. Remove it from that PC first, then pair it again with the laptop.
    6. Basic Windows checks
      • Restart the laptop.
      • Install Windows updates from Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    7. Confirm whether the mouse itself works
      • Test the mouse on another PC.
      • If it does not work there either, the mouse may need replacement.

If the mouse asks for a Bluetooth PIN, try 0000 or 1234.
