At the present, Sound Settings tells me that I don't have a phone, but I've used the microphone in both Teams and Zoom.

    Hi Colleen,

For the best possible assistance, please share more details about your situation:

    • Are you trying to use the computer’s built-in microphone, a headset, or a connected phone?
    • Where exactly does the "I don’t have a phone" message appear: Windows Sound settings or Teams device settings?
    • What is the exact wording of the message, preferably with a screenshot?
    • Can you select and test the microphone under Teams > Settings > Devices?

I want to ensure I have clear information to provide appropriate guidance and I greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out again in the comments on this post. I'm happy to help.

If Teams and Zoom have used the microphone successfully, Windows may not be detecting the currently selected input device in Sound Settings, or the mic may be disabled there even though an app previously accessed it.

    Try this in order:

    1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Under Input, check Choose a device for speaking or recording.
      • If the microphone appears, select it.
      • If it does not appear, select Add device if available.
    3. Next to Volume, make sure the microphone is not muted.
    4. Go to Advanced > More sound settings.
    5. Open the Recording tab.
      • If the microphone is listed but disabled, right-click it and select Enable.
    6. In Teams, open Settings and more > Settings > Devices.
      • Confirm the correct device is selected under Microphone.
      • Select Make a test call.
    7. Check Windows microphone permissions:
      • Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
      • Turn on Microphone access.
      • Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
      • Make sure the specific app toggle is on if the issue is only with Teams.

If the mic works in Teams but still does not show correctly in Windows Sound Settings, that usually points to a Windows device detection or settings issue rather than a Teams-specific problem.

If the device is a Surface, also check Input device selection, Input volume, and run Start test in Sound settings.
