This is usually a recovery or re-registration issue after moving to a new phone.
Try these checks first:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator and make sure the app is unlocked.
- Make sure notifications are enabled for Authenticator.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version from the device app store.
- Check network connectivity by switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Verify the phone date and time are correct.
- If backup was used to restore accounts, for work or school accounts, seeing "Sign in to add your account" after restore is expected. Open the account entry and sign in again.
If the sign-in prompt keeps asking for a code from Authenticator itself, and the old phone is no longer available, the next step depends on the account type:
- Work or school account: contact the organization’s IT admin or helpdesk. They can reset or require re-registration of the authentication method so Authenticator can be set up again on the new phone.
- Personal Microsoft account: try another verification method if one is available. If verification codes are not arriving, verify the security info is correct, check junk mail for email codes, and avoid repeated code requests. If still blocked, use Microsoft account support options.
If the app shows "Authentication did not complete", common causes are:
- app locked
- silent or disabled notifications
- outdated app version
- network issues
- incorrect device date/time
If the issue continues, send logs from Authenticator using Send feedback in the app, then contact Support for personal accounts or the IT admin for work or school accounts.
