Will Windows 11 work if I upgrade from an unactivated Windows 10 device?

I installed windows 10 without the product key (via USB) and my device meets the required specifications of windows 11. If I upgrade to windows 11 now, will I be able to use it unactivated or will it prompt me to activate first?

Yes with limitations you will be able to use it.

Limitations are;
- Activate Windows watermark
- Activation message at Windows Settings
- No personalization settings
- Frequent notification to activate Windows

You might be able to upgrade but you will see activation error and your Windows 11 won't be activated.

So it will show the "Activated Windows" watermark, but I shall be able to use it right?

Yes, you will see that icon and some of Windows features are limited unless you activate the Windows.

Hi @DebarshiPolley-5039 ,

you should be able to run the unactivated Windows 11 with limitations. For instance: You are not able to do personalizations like changing wallpapers, themes, accent colors. Also some features and apps might not be available.

From a legal perspective: Users are allowed to update a licensed Windows 10 to Windows 11. This means you need to have a license for Windows 10 (or Windows 11) before update.
