You can change your backup email in your Microsoft account’s security settings:

1. Sign in with your Outlook.com account and select “Manage how I sign in”.
2. Choose “Add a new way to sign in or verify”, select email, and verify your new address using the code sent to it.
3. Once the new address is verified, expand your old backup email and select “Remove”.

To change the backup email for an Outlook.com account, update the Microsoft account security info or alias, depending on what “backup email” means:

1. Sign in to the Microsoft account at Edit account info.
2. If the goal is to change the email used for account recovery or verification codes:
   • Add a new email as a way to verify sign-in.
   • Complete verification for the new email.
   • After the new method works, remove the old email method.
3. If the goal is to change the sign-in email address tied to the account:
   • Select Add email to add a new alias.
   • If needed, set the new alias as the primary alias.
   • Remove the old alias after the new one is active.

Important:

• Verification codes sent by email can only be sent to the primary alias or another email added as a way to verify sign-in.
• If a Microsoft-domain alias such as Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or Live.com is removed, that address is deleted and cannot be reused later.
• If access to the old recovery email is lost, use the guided support or contact support options listed in the Microsoft account article.
