If this is a Windows 11 local account password, these are the supported reset options:
- On the Windows sign-in screen, select the password entry button.
- Select OK and then Reset password.
- Answer the security questions that were set when the account was created.
If already signed in to another account on the same PC that has administrator rights:
- Open Computer Management.
- Expand Local Users and Groups > Users.
- Right-click the affected user account and select Set Password....
- Enter and confirm the new password.
If signed in and changing the password for the current local account:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Select Password > Change.
- If the old password is forgotten, select I forgot my password.
- Answer the security questions and enter a new password.
Important:
- If there is no administrator account available on the PC to reset the local account password, the supported option is to reset the Windows device.
- Microsoft support cannot retrieve or circumvent a lost or forgotten password.
If this is a Microsoft account sign-in problem rather than a local account, use the Sign-in Helper tool. If this is a work or school account, password reset depends on whether the administrator enabled self-service reset; otherwise the administrator must reset it.
If this is actually a BIOS/UEFI password problem, check with the device owner or IT administrator for the password. For managed Surface devices, the guidance is to check with the IT administrator.
