If Microsoft Authenticator is not showing approval prompts or codes, use another verification method already connected to the account, or start account recovery.

    1. On the sign-in screen, select Try another verification method if it appears.
    2. If another email or phone is already on the account, use that method instead.
    3. If the sign-in screen shows I don't have any of these, select it and follow the prompts to recover access or update backup security info.
    4. If email codes are expected, check the correct mailbox and the Junk folder. Valid verification emails come from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
    5. If text messages are expected, make sure the phone is not blocking texts from unknown numbers, the inbox is not full, and the number is a mobile number, not a VOIP number.
    6. Stop making repeated code requests. Too many attempts can trigger a temporary block. In that case, wait at least 24 hours, and if needed wait longer, up to 1 week.
    7. Try a different network, such as switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular.
    8. If the account is a personal Microsoft account, security methods can be reviewed or added at the Security page by selecting Manage how I sign in and then Add a new way to sign in or verify. Phone number options may not always be available.

    Important:

    • Do not respond to verification codes that were not requested.
    • Microsoft support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details for protected accounts.
    • If no alternate method is available and sign-in still fails, use the Sign-in helper or Contact Support options provided in Microsoft support.
    • If this is a work or school account and the Authenticator registration is no longer valid, the organization Help desk may need to clear the two-step verification settings so sign-in can be set up again.
