A SQL Server technology that supports the creation, management, and delivery of both traditional, paper-oriented reports and interactive, web-based reports.
The installer is rejecting the selected path because Report Builder must be installed to a local hard drive.
Try this:
- In the setup window, keep the install path on a local disk such as:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Report Builder\ - If C: is redirected, mapped, substituted, encrypted, or points to a network location, change the install location to a normal local folder on a physical local drive.
- If the issue continues, install from an elevated command prompt because Windows 10 and later require elevated permissions for command-line installation.
- If using MSI from the command line, use a basic command such as:
msiexec /i ReportBuilder.msi - If a silent install is needed, run Command Prompt as administrator and use:
msiexec /i ReportBuilder3_x86.msi /quiet /l install.logThe log helps capture installation errors.
If Windows Installer returns error 1603 during setup, the documented causes include:
- the app is already installed
- the target folder is encrypted
- the target drive is accessed as a substitute drive
- the SYSTEM account lacks Full Control on the target folder
For that case, check these in order:
- Open Settings > System > Apps & features and see whether Report Builder is already installed. If it is, uninstall it and reinstall.
- Make sure the install folder is not encrypted.
- Make sure the target drive is not a substituted drive.
- Check the target drive or folder permissions and verify the SYSTEM account has Full Control.
Report Builder can be installed from the Microsoft Download Center, a report server web portal, a shared network folder, or by command line.
