Microsoft - Surface Laptop 6 - straight out of the box. Receiving a blue screen with stop code: Phase1 Initialization failed. I've turned off, unplugged, plugged back in and still receiving same code.

Unplug everything: USB devices, dock, and any microSD card.

Hold the power button for 30 seconds to force a full power-off, then release.

Leave it on the official Surface charger for 15 minutes or more, then power on with nothing else connected.

Use the interrupted-boot method: power on, and as soon as the Surface logo and spinner appear, hold the power button to force it off. Do this 2-3 times. On the next boot it should land in "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then the blue Windows Recovery screen.

    Try Startup Repair first.

If that fails, try Reset this PC (cloud download is better than local reinstall if the local image is the problem).

Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt is also an option, but with a fresh OOBE-stage failure it's rarely useful.

From another PC, go to the Surface recovery image page at support.microsoft.com/surface/recoveryimage, sign in, and enter the device serial number. Download the Laptop 6 image and write it to a USB drive of at least 16 GB, using their instructions. Then in WinRE choose Use a device > the USB, and let it do a full restore.

PHASE1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED means system initialization failed during startup.

For a new Surface Laptop 6 that is failing straight out of the box, use this order:

    1. Disconnect everything from the device.
      • Remove any accessories or external devices.
      • Make sure the Surface is charged.
    2. Try the built-in recovery shortcuts.
      • Press Ctrl + Shift + Win + B.
      • If nothing changes, force a restart by pressing and holding the power button for 20 seconds.
    3. If it still does not start normally, reset it by using a USB recovery drive.
      • Insert the USB recovery drive into the Surface.
      • Press and hold the volume-down button while pressing and releasing the power button.
      • When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-down button.
      • Check whether Windows starts.
    4. If Windows starts after recovery:
      • Install the latest Surface and Windows updates to help prevent future problems.
    5. If Windows still does not start:
      • Use Device Service and Repair / service options for the device.

Because this is a brand-new device, recovery or service is the supported path if the basic restart steps do not clear the stop code.
