Hi, let’s try a few steps to get your Microsoft Surface connected to your HP Smart Tank 6000 series printer.

    1. Check the Wi-Fi connection

Make sure the printer’s Wi-Fi light is steady and not blinking.

Ensure your Surface and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If your router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try connecting both devices to the same network.

Print a Wireless Network Test Report from the printer to check whether it has received an IP address.

    2. Restart all devices

Turn off the printer, router and Surface. Switch them back on in this order: router first, then printer, and finally the Surface.

    3. Add the printer in Windows

Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device.

If Windows cannot find the printer, select Add manually → Add a printer using an IP address or hostname and enter the printer’s IP address from the network report.

    4. Try setting it up through HP Smart

Install or open the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store and select Add printer. If the printer is not detected, you may need to restore its network settings and put it back into Wi-Fi setup mode. Check the printer’s instructions for the correct button combination.

    5. Check Windows printing services

Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Print Spooler and check that it is running. If necessary, restart the service.

You can also remove any old or duplicate entries for the printer under Printers & scanners and try adding it again. Windows’ printer troubleshooter may help too.

    6. Install the correct HP driver

If the printer still does not work, visit the official HP Support website at https://support.hp.com and search for HP Smart Tank 6000 series. Download the appropriate software and driver for your Windows version.

    7. Test with a USB cable

If possible, connect the printer directly to your Surface using a compatible USB cable. If it prints successfully over USB, the issue is likely related to the wireless connection or network settings.

Try these steps one at a time. If the problem persists, let us know what happens when you try to add the printer and whether Windows displays any error message. We can then narrow down the cause.

The HP Smart Tank 6000 series may not support Bluetooth printer setup. A matching Microsoft Q&A answer for this model states it may need to be set up using Wi‑Fi instead.

If Bluetooth pairing is supported on the printer, use these steps in Windows:

    1. Turn on the printer and make it discoverable. Check the printer documentation or the manufacturer’s site for how to enable discoverable mode.
    2. On the Surface, open Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
    3. Select Add a printer or scanner.
    4. Wait while Windows searches.
    5. If the printer appears, select it and choose Add device.

If the printer is not found or not recognized, try this troubleshooting path:

    1. Confirm the printer is powered on.
    2. Verify Bluetooth is enabled on both the Surface and the printer, and that the printer is within range.
    3. Restart the Print Spooler service:
      • Press Windows key + R
      • Type services.msc and press Enter
      • Find Print Spooler
      • Right-click it and select Restart
    4. Remove and reinstall the printer:
      • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners
      • Select the printer and choose Remove device
      • Then select Add a printer or scanner and try again
    5. Update the printer driver from the printer manufacturer’s website.

If Bluetooth continues to fail, set up the printer over Wi‑Fi and make sure the printer and Surface are on the same wireless network.
