Install the official Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable packages, which provide VCRUNTIME140.dll and MSVCP140.dll; do not download the DLL files individually.
Install the required runtimes
- Download and run the Microsoft installers:
- Install both x64 and x86 on a typical 64-bit Windows 11 PC because a 32-bit application requires the x86 runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit. The runtime architecture must match the application architecture.^1^
- If an installer reports that the package is already installed, use its Repair option if offered.
- Restart Windows, then open the application again. Reinstalling both packages is also the accepted resolution for matching
VCRUNTIME140.dll errors on Windows 11.^2^
If Settings → System → About → System type identifies an ARM-based PC, the current x64 package contains both ARM64 and x64 binaries. Install x86 separately if the affected application is 32-bit.^1^
If the application still does not open
Repair the affected application:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the application.
- Select Advanced options → Repair, if available.
- If there is no Advanced options entry, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, right-click the application, and select Repair or Change.^3^
If repair is unavailable or unsuccessful, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from its publisher or Microsoft Store.
If the Visual C++ installer fails
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install pending updates under Settings → Windows Update, restart, and retry.
- Note any displayed error code. Microsoft documents targeted handling for errors such as
1603, 5, 32, 1620, and 1714, as well as how to collect the VC Redist installation logs.^4^
Only use Redistributable installers downloaded from Microsoft and signed by Microsoft.^4^ DLL download sites can supply an incorrect architecture, version, or unsafe file.
