Because you can still sign in, secure the Outlook.com account immediately—scan your device first, change the password, and then remove any unauthorized forwarding or account settings.
Secure the account now
- Run a full malware scan before changing the password.
- In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options → Full scan → Scan now.
- Microsoft recommends completing this first so malware cannot capture the replacement password.^1^
- Change the password from a clean device.
- Use a new, unique password that has not been used for another account.
- If you lose access before completing this, use Microsoft’s password-reset option from the hacked-account recovery page.^1^
- Review Outlook.com for changes made by the attacker.
Check and remove anything unfamiliar under:
- Settings → Mail → Forwarding
- Settings → Mail → Rules
- Automatic replies
- Connected accounts
These settings can redirect or hide incoming mail even after the password is changed.^1^
- Check recent account activity.
Review successful sign-ins and security challenges. Mark unfamiliar activity as unauthorized where that option is offered.^2^
- Review security information.
Remove recovery email addresses, phone numbers, or authentication methods you do not recognize. Add your own current recovery methods and enable two-step verification.^3^
Request a live support agent
- Open Contact Microsoft customer support.^4^
- Select Personal account.
- Enter a description such as “My personal Outlook.com account was hacked, but I can still sign in.”
- Select Get Help.
- If self-help does not resolve it, select Contact Support and choose the chat option offered for your region and current support availability.
The hacked-account sign-in helper can also ask for your email address or phone number and may offer the opportunity to speak with an agent.^1^
Support agents cannot directly access the mailbox, change account details, or bypass identity verification. Never send anyone your password or a verification code.^4^
