Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Sign in directly at login.live.com, then open the required account-dashboard section in a second tab to bypass the main dashboard redirect.
Try the direct account route
- Close all Microsoft account tabs.
- Open https://login.live.com/ and sign in with the personal Microsoft account used on Xbox.
- Without signing out, open one of these direct pages in a new tab:
- If a direct page opens, make the required account change there instead of entering through the dashboard home page. These are official sections of the Microsoft account dashboard.^1^
Microsoft documents the same direct-authentication approach for a redirect loop: authenticate at login.live.com, keep that session open, and access the destination in another tab.^2^
If this happens in Microsoft Edge
Check whether Microsoft domains have been split across Windows security zones, which can prevent their cookies from being shared:
- Open Control Panel → Internet Options → Security → Trusted sites → Sites.
- Remove these entries from Trusted sites, if present:
-
microsoft.com -
support.microsoft.com -
login.live.com -
login.microsoftonline.com
-
- Close all browser windows, reopen Edge, and repeat the direct sign-in test.
If an organization requires one of those domains in Trusted sites, all four must be in the same zone instead. Microsoft specifically identifies mismatched security-zone cookie handling as a cause of authentication pages redirecting back to sign-in.^2^
Escalate if every device and network loops
Since the Xbox sign-in works, avoid further password changes unless the sign-in helper identifies a credential problem. Run the Microsoft account sign-in helper; it checks the affected address or phone number and provides account-specific actions.^3^
If it finds no problem but the account pages still loop:
- Open Contact Microsoft Support.
- Enter Microsoft account dashboard sign-in loop.
- Select Get Help, then Contact Support when offered.
- State: “The personal account works on Xbox, but
account.microsoft.comredirects repeatedly to sign-in. Direct dashboard pages and the cross-domain cookie/security-zone check were tested.”
Support can investigate the sign-in behavior, but agents cannot access or change account details or send password-reset links.^4^
