Back up any visible exam documents to OneDrive, a USB drive, or another physical device, then run Office’s full repair from Windows 11 Settings instead of selecting Repair Now in that Word message again.
1. Protect your saved work first
- Open File Explorer by pressing Windows key + E.
- Check Documents, Desktop, Downloads, and any folder where you saved your exam work.
- Copy important files to OneDrive, a USB drive, or another device. Copying them to another folder on the same drive is not a complete backup.
- Do not delete or move the originals yet.
Repairing the Office installation is separate from opening or editing your saved documents. However, work that was never saved depends on Word’s AutoRecover feature. Files saved in OneDrive may also have AutoSave and Version History protection.^1^
2. Run the correct Office repair
Because the popup repair already failed, close Word and perform the repair from Windows:
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots (…) beside it, then Modify.
- Use the option displayed for your installation:
- If you see Online Repair, select Online Repair → Repair. This is the more thorough option.
- If you instead see Change your installation, select Repair → Continue.
- Follow the prompts, then restart the computer and open Word.
Microsoft documents different repair choices for Click-to-Run and MSI-based installations, so Online Repair may not appear on every installation.^2^ The full Online Repair is also the recommended next action for this exact error when the popup’s Repair Now action does not resolve it.^3^
Online Repair needs an Internet connection. Before starting, make sure the Microsoft account associated with the Office purchase or Microsoft 365 subscription is available in case Office requests activation afterward.
3. Recover anything that was not saved
When Word opens again, look for the Document Recovery pane:
- Open the version with the newest date and time.
- Immediately choose File → Save As and save a separate copy.
- If asked whether to remove recovered files, select Yes, I want to view these files later until all needed work has been checked. Microsoft identifies that as the safest option when unsure.^4^
If Word opens but one particular document does not:
- Select File → Open → Browse.
- Select the document once.
- Select the arrow beside Open.
- Choose Open and Repair.^5^
Do not uninstall Office unless this full repair also fails; secure the exam files and check Document Recovery first.
