Before setting up a dual-boot system, understand that it allows you to install two or more operating systems on the same computer and choose which one to run when the computer starts. For example, you could keep your current Windows 11 installation and install another Windows 11 build or a Linux distribution on a separate partition. Windows 7 or Windows 10 may also be possible, but compatibility, licensing, and security need to be considered. Windows 10 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025, and Windows 7 has been unsupported for years, so neither is recommended for regular internet-connected use.
Before proceeding, back up your important files and create Windows recovery media. You will need sufficient disk space for each operating system, and each installation should ideally have its own partition or separate drive. Installing another operating system can affect the bootloader, partition layout, and access to existing files if the process is performed incorrectly. If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, save your recovery key and understand how changes to boot settings can trigger a recovery prompt.
When reviewing the dual-boot options on your screen, determine whether they refer to choosing between already-installed operating systems, creating a new boot entry, or installing another operating system. These are different operations. Also check whether the computer uses UEFI or legacy BIOS, whether Secure Boot is enabled, and whether the older operating system supports your hardware and storage drivers. Windows 7, in particular, may not support newer hardware without additional drivers or configuration.
Note that dual booting does not let you run both operating systems simultaneously. You must restart the computer to switch between them. If your goal is simply to explore different Windows builds, a virtual machine using Hyper-V or another virtualization platform may be safer and easier to manage, provided your edition of Windows and hardware support it.
