A product key is a 25 character alphanumeric code that you can redeem and link to your Microsoft account to install and activate Office.

Where did you purchase the subscription, directly from Microsoft or from a third party?

Try to redeem the product key from here first: https://setup.office.com/redeem/enter-key

After successfull redemtion, log in to your microsft account: https://account.microsoft.com/services can you see the subscription there linked already?

If you purchase online from Microsft it is autmatically linked to the Microsft account no need of product key.

Product Code from the purchase of 365 is a different number of digits

Could you elaborate on the symptoms you are seeing? As Estrella pointed out, there is a standard format for Microsoft Office product keys. Are you saying that you think you got the wrong key? Did you purchase from a non-Microsoft seller?

Are you trying to enter the key at https://setup.office.com and getting an error message?

A Microsoft 365 product key must contain 25 letters and numbers in five groups; if your purchase code has a different length, do not enter it as the product key.

If you purchased directly from Microsoft

A digital Microsoft 365 purchase normally has no product key. It is linked to the Microsoft account used for the purchase.^1^

    1. Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
    2. Sign in with the Microsoft account used to make the purchase.
    3. Find Microsoft 365 and select Install.
    4. Open Word or another Office app and sign in with that same account to activate it.

The differently sized number on your receipt may be an order or transaction number, not an activation key.

If you purchased a card or code from a retailer

Look for a code formatted as:

    XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

It may be under a scratch-off silver coating, inside the package, or in the retailer’s confirmation email.^2^

    Then:

    1. Go to Office.com/setup.
    2. Sign in with the Microsoft account you want associated with Microsoft 365.
    3. Enter the 25-character key, without hyphens if requested.
    4. Complete redemption, then install Microsoft 365 from Services & subscriptions.^3^

If the package or email contains no 25-character key, contact the retailer and provide the receipt. If the error says KEY_NOT_ACTIVATED, the retailer must activate the key at the point of sale.^4^

If the key was already redeemed

A product key can only be redeemed once. Sign in to Services & subscriptions with the account that originally redeemed it and install from there; the key is no longer required.^4^

Do not post the code, receipt number, or account details publicly.
