A Microsoft offering that enables tracking of cloud usage and expenditures for Azure and other cloud providers.
An Azure Plan subscription does not by itself confirm that the Azure Free Account benefit was provisioned; verify that the subscription has the Free Trial credit/spending limit, and open a billing support request if those indicators remain absent.
Verify the Free Trial provisioning
Eligible new Azure customers receive USD 200 in their billing currency for 30 days. An Azure Free Trial also has a spending limit equal to its credit—USD 200—enabled by default.^1^^2^
- In the Azure portal, select your profile at the upper right and choose Switch directory.
- Select the directory in which the account was created.
- Go to Cost Management + Billing → My subscriptions, and open the new subscription.
- Check for:
- A credit balance or expiration date under Credits/My credits.
- A banner or subscription property showing a USD 200 spending limit.
- An offer identified as Free Trial, rather than only an ordinary Azure Plan or pay-as-you-go subscription.
The directory matters because subscriptions and their billing information can appear missing when the portal is displaying another tenant.^2^
Because the account was created today, allow approximately 15–60 minutes, then sign out and reopen the portal in an InPrivate browser session. This short provisioning delay has been reported for newly created free accounts.^3^
If the subscription has neither credits nor a spending limit after that, it might not have been created under the Free Trial offer. Pay-as-you-go subscriptions do not display or support the credit-based spending limit.^2^ Free Trial eligibility is also limited to users who are new to Azure; a previous Azure subscription can make the account ineligible.^4^
Request account-specific verification
Only Azure Billing Support can inspect the account and confirm whether the benefit was provisioned correctly.
- In the Azure portal, select the ? in the global header.
- Describe the issue as “Azure Free Trial $200 credit not provisioned.”
- Complete the suggested diagnostics.
- Select Create a support request.
- Choose the new subscription and the Billing/Subscription management issue type.
- Include:
- Account creation date.
- Subscription name and ID.
- Screenshot showing Azure Plan.
- Screenshot showing the empty Benefits/Azure Credits page.
- A request to verify the subscription offer ID and Free Trial eligibility/activation.
Subscription-management support, including billing, is available without purchasing a technical support plan. Creating the request normally requires Owner, Contributor, or Support Request Contributor access; account-specific billing changes can require billing-administrator access.^5^
Do not create paid resources until the offer is confirmed. If no spending limit is present, the subscription might permit pay-as-you-go charges.
Dynamic membership has a separate license requirement
The $200 Azure infrastructure credit does not itself grant Microsoft Entra ID P1 licensing. Dynamic user or group membership requires:
- Microsoft Entra ID P1, P2, or Intune for Education licensing.
- Enough licenses in the tenant to cover every unique user who belongs to one or more dynamic membership groups.
- No license for devices that are members of a device-based dynamic group.^6^
Microsoft Entra ID P1/P2 is listed among external services that can incur separate charges and cannot simply be treated as consumption against Azure subscription credits.^2^ After confirming the Azure credit, check Microsoft Entra admin center → Identity → Billing → Licenses → All products for an existing P1/P2 license or an available trial before testing user-based dynamic membership.
