Recover any missing edits with OneDrive Version History before turning off Documents backup, then select Keep files only on my PC when disabling that backup.

    1. Recover edits that OneDrive may have overwritten

For each affected Word or Excel file:

    1. Close the file in Word or Excel.
    2. In File Explorer, locate the file under OneDrive – Personal → Documents.
    3. Right-click it and select Version history.
    4. Review versions by date and time.
    5. Open the newest version containing the missing edits.
    6. Select Restore. The restored copy becomes the current version, while the version it replaces remains in the history. ^1^

Alternatively, from Word or Excel, open the file and select File → Info → Version History, inspect the available versions, and restore the correct one. ^2^

Before continuing, make a separate copy of the recovered financial documents in a folder outside OneDrive, such as a newly created local folder under C:\Users\<your-name>\Financial Records.

    2. Stop OneDrive from backing up Documents

    1. Save and close every open Word and Excel file. OneDrive cannot move an open file while changing folder backup.
    2. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area near the clock. If it is hidden, select the Show hidden icons arrow.
    3. Select Help & Settings → Settings.
    4. Open Sync and backup.
    5. Select Manage backup.
    6. Turn off Documents.
    7. When prompted, select Keep files only on my PC—not Keep files only in OneDrive. This removes the files from OneDrive while retaining them locally. ^3^
    8. Open File Explorer and verify that the documents now appear in the local Documents folder and open correctly before deleting, unlinking, or uninstalling anything.

If OneDrive reports “Some files couldn’t be moved”, those files are cloud-only. In File Explorer, right-click the affected files or Documents folder, select Always keep on this device, wait for the solid green check marks, and then repeat the stop-backup operation. ^3^

If saved changes still disappear afterward

Test with a new document saved directly in the local Documents folder:

    1. In Word or Excel, select File → Save As → Browse.
    2. Confirm that the path does not contain OneDrive.
    3. Save, close, reopen, and verify the change.

If that local test also loses changes, the problem is no longer OneDrive folder backup. Record the exact file path and any Word or Excel message; those details are needed to distinguish an Office save problem from a sync problem.
