Opening Websites

Question

I have two profiles on my computer

Personal and business; i want the work computer to open the work profile instead of the Personal Profile; if keeps reverting back to the personal profile each time i close edge and reopen it?

Set the administrator-controlled EdgeDefaultProfileEnabled policy to the exact name of your work profile so Edge opens that profile instead of reopening the last-used personal profile.^1^

On a managed work computer

Ask your IT administrator to configure:

• Policy: EdgeDefaultProfileEnabled
• Desired value: the exact, case-sensitive name of your work profile
• Group Policy location: Administrative Templates → Microsoft Edge → Identity and sign-in → Default Profile Setting Enabled
• Supported platform: Windows with Microsoft Edge version 101 or later

To find the profile name to send IT:

1. Open Edge and select the profile icon in the upper-right corner.
2. Select Profile settings.
3. Note the displayed name of the work profile exactly, including capitalization. Edge maintains separate settings, bookmarks, extensions, and other data for each profile.^2^

After IT applies the policy:

1. Close all Edge windows.
2. Reopen Edge.
3. Enter edge://policy in the address bar.
4. Confirm EdgeDefaultProfileEnabled appears with the work profile’s name.

A full Edge restart is required because this policy does not refresh dynamically. If the configured profile name is not found, Edge behaves as though the policy were not configured.^1^

If you administer the computer yourself

Use Local Group Policy only if:

• Your Windows edition includes Local Group Policy Editor.
• The Microsoft Edge administrative templates (ADMX) are installed.
• You are authorized to change browser policies.

If Default Profile Setting Enabled is missing, that can mean the Edge ADMX templates are not installed; it does not by itself prove that organizational management is blocking the setting. If the setting is locked or edge://policy shows it is enforced by your organization, contact IT rather than modifying organizational policy.

Important exceptions

This startup policy does not control:

• Sites assigned through Profile preferences for sites
• Links opened from Outlook or Teams
• Shortcuts that launch Edge with an explicit --profile-directory parameter^1^

If only particular work websites open in the personal profile, open:

edge://settings/profiles/multiProfileSettings

Then use Profile preferences for sites to assign those websites to the work profile. Edge can remember the selected profile for each URL.^3^
