Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Cancel the subscription from the Microsoft account used to buy it; the cancellation process will automatically show whether the mistaken purchase qualifies for a refund.
Cancel and request the refund
If “Microsoft Essentials” appears as a Microsoft 365 subscription purchased directly from Microsoft:
- Open Microsoft Services & subscriptions.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Find the subscription and select Manage.
- Select Cancel or Upgrade or Cancel.
- Complete the on-screen cancellation steps. Microsoft will display whether the purchase is eligible for a refund and provide the applicable refund option.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft 365")
Not every cancellation generates a refund. In most cases, eligibility applies when cancellation occurs within 30 days of the initial purchase or before the first recurring billing date, whichever comes first. The most recent recurring charge may also qualify when cancellation occurs within 30 days, limited to one refund per Microsoft account and subscription product.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")
If the page shows Turn on recurring billing, the subscription is already scheduled to expire and will not renew. That status alone does not confirm a refund; use Microsoft Support if the cancellation workflow did not offer one.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft 365")
If Microsoft does not show the subscription or refund option
- Apple App Store or Google Play purchase: Request cancellation and a refund from Apple or Google.
- Retailer purchase, such as Amazon or Best Buy: Contact that retailer directly.
- Wrong or missing account: Check that the signed-in personal Microsoft account is the one used for payment.
- Outstanding balance: Any overdue amount must be paid before cancellation can be completed.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Unable to cancel your Microsoft subscription | Microsoft Support")
If the purchase was made directly from Microsoft but no refund option appears, open Microsoft Contact Support, enter the billing issue, select Get Help, and then Contact Support to reach the appropriate billing option.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")
If a refund has already been approved, it typically returns to the original payment method within 3–5 business days. Contact Billing Support if it has not arrived after five business days.^4^
