Start Word in Office Safe Mode first; if it still does not open, run an Office repair.
1. Start Word in Safe Mode
- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Type:
winword /safe
- Select OK. Include the space before
/safe.
Safe Mode starts Word without automatically loading certain add-ins and customizations, which can prevent normal startup.^1^
If Word opens:
- Select File > Options > Add-Ins.
- At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins from Manage, then select Go.
- Clear one add-in, select OK, and restart Word normally.
- Repeat until Word opens normally. Leave the problematic add-in disabled or obtain an updated version.^2^
2. If Safe Mode does not open, repair Office
Repair affects the complete Microsoft 365 or Office installation, not only Word.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair > Repair and follow the prompts.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start > Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office, then Modify.
- Choose Online Repair > Repair and follow the prompts.
Online Repair is more thorough than Quick Repair. Restart the computer afterward if prompted, then try Word again.^3^
If repair also fails, the next supported step is to uninstall and reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office.^2^
