    Hello Raj Bagla,

This sounds like Excel has entered reduced-functionality mode. To narrow this down, could you please confirm the following?

    1. Are you using Windows or macOS?
    2. Which Office edition is installed, such as Office Home & Business 2021, 2024, or Microsoft 365?
    3. Does the same activation or saving issue occur in other Office apps, such as Word or PowerPoint?
    4. What is your current Excel version?

    To check:

    • Windows: Open Excel and go to File > Account. Under Product Information, note the product name. Then select About Excel to see the version.
    • Mac: Open Excel and select Excel > About Microsoft Excel from the menu bar.

These details will help determine whether this is an installation, activation, or license-account issue.

This can happen when Excel is not recognizing the installed license correctly, or when files are being opened from OneDrive without a local copy available.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Refresh the Office license on the Mac
      • Open any Office app such as Word.
      • On the menu bar, select Word > About Word > More Info… > Refresh License.
      • Close all Office apps and reopen Excel.
    2. Sign out and sign back in to Office
      • Open an Office app.
      • Sign out of the account currently used in Office.
      • Sign back in with the same Microsoft account that is associated with the purchase.
      • Then test Save and Save As again.
    3. Check whether the file is stored in OneDrive online only
      • If the workbook is in OneDrive and not fully downloaded to the Mac, save may fail or appear unavailable.
      • Download the file from OneDrive to the Mac, or disable Files on Demand in OneDrive settings so a local copy is kept.
      • Then open the local copy and try saving again.
    4. Try Excel’s immediate save workarounds so work is not lost
      • Use File > Save As and save with a new file name.
      • Try saving the workbook to another location, such as the local hard disk.
      • Create a new workbook and save it to the original location. If the new workbook also cannot save there, the issue may be with that location rather than the file.
    5. Check for common save blockers
      • Make sure the destination has enough free disk space.
      • If saving to a network or external drive, try saving locally instead.
      • If antivirus software is running, temporarily deactivate it and test saving.
      • If the file path is very long, shorten the file name or folder path.
    6. If Save is still greyed out
      • Update Office from File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

If the workbook still will not save after the license refresh and sign-in steps, save a copy with a new name or to another location first to protect current changes.
