Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Microsoft 365 Family includes Copilot in PowerPoint only for the subscription owner, so verify that PowerPoint is signed in with the exact personal Microsoft account that owns the active Family subscription, then refresh its license.^1^
1. Confirm ownership and activation
- Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page while signed in with the account used to purchase the upgrade.
- Confirm that Microsoft 365 Family appears as Active.
- Confirm this account is the subscription owner, rather than a family member receiving a shared subscription.
Copilot’s AI features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Designer cannot be shared with other Family members.^2^
If Family is shown only as shared with the account, the Office applications are included, but the owner’s Copilot entitlement is not. The owner must use Copilot, or the family member needs a separately qualifying subscription.
2. Match and refresh the PowerPoint account
In PowerPoint, check that the signed-in account is the same personal Microsoft account identified above—not another personal, work, or school account.
Windows
- Open PowerPoint → File → Account.
- Under User Information and Product Information, verify the owner account.
- Select Update License.
- Close every Microsoft 365 application, then reopen PowerPoint.
macOS
- Open PowerPoint.
- From the macOS menu bar, select PowerPoint → About PowerPoint.
- Select More Info… → Refresh License.
- Close all Microsoft 365 applications, then reopen PowerPoint.
Microsoft documents these procedures for features that do not appear after licensing changes.^3^
If multiple accounts are present, Copilot can use the owner account’s entitlement with files accessible through another signed-in account, but its AI usage remains charged to the owner’s entitlement.^4^
3. Verify the result
After reopening PowerPoint:
- Look for the Copilot entry point in the lower-right corner of the presentation; on current builds it may no longer be a separate ribbon button.
- Open it and confirm that Copilot can create or edit a presentation.
- Do not use presentation quality alone as the activation test. Microsoft 365 Family provides Copilot integration, but usage limits apply; an upgrade does not guarantee that every generated presentation will appear qualitatively different from free Copilot output.^5^
A “Basic” or similar label displayed while signed in with a work or school account identifies that organizational account’s license; it does not verify the Family subscription attached to a separate personal Microsoft account.^1^
If the entitlement still does not appear
If the dashboard shows that the same account is both the active Family subscription owner and the account signed into PowerPoint, but Copilot remains unavailable after the license refresh:
- Update Microsoft 365 to the latest build.
- Check that connected experiences are enabled:
- Windows: File → Account → Account Privacy → Manage Settings
- Mac: PowerPoint → Preferences → Privacy
- Enable Experiences that analyze your content and All connected experiences.^3^
- Contact Microsoft Support and request an account-side check of the Copilot entitlement and AI-credit status. Microsoft 365 subscriptions include chat support.[^6^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro subscription benefits")
Age requirements can also disable AI features even when the subscription otherwise qualifies.^2^
