Configuring preferences and options in Outlook.com
For a Microsoft account, the most common reasons the code does not arrive at the alternate email are:
- The code was sent to the wrong mailbox. Email verification codes are only sent to the primary alias or to an email already added as a verification method.
- The message was filtered to Junk. Valid messages come from
@accountprotection.microsoft.com. - Too many repeated code requests triggered a temporary block.
- The account or verification flow was flagged for unusual activity.
- If the alternate address is another
@outlook.com,@hotmail.com,@live.com, or@msn.comaccount, signing in to that second account can sign out the first account in the same browser session.
Try this path:
- Check the alternate account’s Junk Email folder for a message from
@accountprotection.microsoft.com. - If the alternate email is another Microsoft account, use InPrivate/private browsing:
- In one private window, stay signed in to the account requesting the code.
- In a second private window, sign in to the alternate email account and look for the message.
- Copy the code back to the first window.
- Avoid repeated resend attempts. Excessive requests can cause a temporary block.
- If blocked, wait at least 24 hours before trying again. If needed, wait longer, up to 1 week.
- If another verification method is listed, use that instead.
- To verify or replace security info:
- Go to the Microsoft account Security tab.
- Select Manage how I sign in.
- Check whether the alternate email is actually listed there.
- If access exists to another method, select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- If no listed methods are accessible, at the Verify your identity prompt select I don't have any of these and follow the steps to replace security info.
Important: do not change all security info at the same time. That can restrict the account for 30 days.
