Edge Update Caused ReadAloud Error?

Version 156.0.4314.58 (Official build) (64-bit)

When trying to use read aloud normally, it works as it expected -- reading the highlighted paragraph and transitions to the next paragraph with highlights however, when I click read next paragraph up at the top, the highlight goes missing, it does read the next paragraph but ceases to read anything after that, just that next paragraph. This is a new issue I've noticed only after the most recent update because I use this function a lot.

I've tried seeing if I have the latest update, incognito mode, disabling extensions, restarting my computer, going to different websites to see if it occurs there as well(it does), none of which fixes the issues.

Test Read Aloud in a new unsigned-in Edge profile; if the failure also occurs there, repair Edge and submit a diagnostic feedback report because Microsoft does not currently list this Read Aloud symptom as a known issue in version 156.0.4314.58.

Version 156.0.4314.58 is the October 30, 2026 Stable update, but its release notes mention only unspecified bug and performance fixes. The current known-issues list does not identify this next-paragraph/highlighting failure.^1^^2^

Since you already tested updates, InPrivate mode, extensions, restarts, and multiple websites, skip those checks.

    1. Isolate the Edge profile

InPrivate still uses your existing Edge profile configuration, so test a completely separate profile:

    1. Select the Profile icon in Edge’s upper-right corner.
    2. Select Set up a new profile.
    3. Select Personal.
    4. Choose Start without your data—do not sign in or enable sync yet.
    5. Open one of the pages where the problem is reproducible.
    6. Start Read Aloud, then use Next paragraph several times.

Microsoft documents that profiles maintain separate settings, extensions, themes, and preferences.^3^

    Interpret the result:

    • Works in the new profile: the failure is associated with the original profile or its synchronized data. Use the new profile temporarily. Sign in only after confirming Read Aloud works; if the problem returns immediately after signing in, include that result in the feedback report.
    • Fails in both profiles: the behavior is installation-wide or part of the current Edge build rather than isolated to the existing profile.

    2. Repair Edge if both profiles fail

Repair reinstalls Edge components without normally affecting browser data or settings:

    1. Close Edge for every signed-in Windows user.
    2. Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
    3. Find Microsoft Edge and select Modify.
    4. Approve the administrator prompt.
    5. Select Repair while connected to the internet.
    6. Reopen Edge and repeat the exact next-paragraph test.

If Modify is unavailable, the browser may be organization-managed; contact the device administrator instead. Microsoft’s repair procedure states that browser data and settings should not be affected.^4^

    3. Report the reproducible regression

If repair does not change the behavior:

    1. Open a page that consistently reproduces it.
    2. Select Settings and more (…) → Help and feedback → Send feedback.
    3. Use a specific title such as:
Edge 156.0.4314.58 Read Aloud stops after Next paragraph
    4. Include these reproduction steps:
      • Start Read Aloud on highlighted text.
      • Confirm automatic paragraph transitions and highlighting work.
      • Select Next paragraph in the toolbar.
      • Note that highlighting disappears and playback stops after that paragraph.
    5. State that it reproduces across websites, with extensions disabled, in InPrivate, after restarting Windows, and—depending on your result—in a new unsigned-in profile and after Edge repair.
    6. Include diagnostic data and, if acceptable, attach a short recording that shows the toolbar action and missing highlight. Review the recording for personal or sensitive page content before submitting.

Edge’s feedback form can include the current URL, relevant diagnostics, screenshots, attachments, and recordings.^5^

The timing makes an update regression plausible, especially because the issue is cross-site, but the available Microsoft release and known-issue records do not yet establish version 156.0.4314.58 as the cause.
