Sign in to Services & subscriptions with the Microsoft account that owns Microsoft 365, then renew the existing subscription rather than purchasing another one; if its grace-period or recurring-billing status prevents that, Microsoft Support must review the account’s billing state.
Check and renew the existing subscription
- Open Microsoft account Services & subscriptions and sign in with the same account originally used to purchase Microsoft 365.
- Find Microsoft 365 and select Manage.
- Follow the action matching the displayed status:
- Renew or Resubscribe: select it and complete payment. This also turns on recurring billing.
- Turn on recurring billing: select it and follow the payment prompts.
- Past due: settle the balance on the existing subscription instead of attempting a separate purchase.
- Has recurring billing with a future renewal date: do not purchase another subscription; the existing plan is already scheduled to renew.
- Expires on [date]: recurring billing is off, so select Renew if available.
Microsoft documents these status indicators and renewal actions in its subscription guidance.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Problems renewing a Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Turn recurring billing on or off for a Microsoft subscription | Microsoft Support")
The exact CannotPurchaseWithActiveRecurrencePastGracePeriod error has also been reported when the account still treats an earlier subscription as pending or in a grace-period state.^3^
If no renewal action works
Contact Microsoft billing support because this may require an account-level subscription-state correction:
- Open Microsoft Support from the Contact Support option in the renewal article.
- Enter: CannotPurchaseWithActiveRecurrencePastGracePeriod.
- Select Get Help → Contact Support.
- Choose Microsoft 365 and Office → Manage my subscription, then select chat or the available callback option.
- Provide:
- The complete error name.
- Timestamp: November 1, 2026 at 3:01:57 PM UTC.
- Correlation string:
00-91cb5ab3219f451d9b8030573e597f7f-0000000000000000-01.
- The status shown under Services & subscriptions.
- Proof of purchase if payment was already taken.
Microsoft’s renewal guidance directs unresolved purchasing and renewal errors to Support, and the exact-error support case provides the same escalation route.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "How to renew your Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")^5^
If Microsoft 365 was purchased elsewhere
If Manage, Renew, or payment controls are missing and the subscription was purchased through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer, billing may be controlled by that provider. Use the provider’s subscription-management system or contact its support; Microsoft account controls can be limited for third-party purchases.[^6^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Where can I manage my Microsoft 365 subscription? | Microsoft Support")
If a retailer supplied a product key, redeem it at Microsoft365.com/setup using the same Microsoft account. If the key still cannot attach because the old subscription remains in a grace state, proceed with Microsoft Support rather than buying another key.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Problems renewing a Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft Support")
