A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
I understand how concerning this is, particularly because the notebook contains your university work.
According to Microsoft’s troubleshooting article for permission errors when opening or syncing a OneNote notebook, common causes include having recently changed your password, being signed in with a different account than the one authorized to open the notebook, or the owner having revoked your access or the server permissions having changed. With a school account, it could also be that the license or status of your account has changed. These are only possibilities, and I can’t confirm what applies in your case.
Things you can try right away:
- Check in the browser. Sign in to office.com with your university account, open OneDrive, and see whether the notebook appears there, then try opening it in OneNote for the web. If it opens, you can copy the important pages to another notebook to keep a temporary copy.
- Confirm the right account. If you also have a personal Microsoft account, check whether the notebook is stored in that account’s OneDrive, because this error often appears when a notebook is opened with an account other than the one that created it or that it was shared with.
- If OneNote on your computer still shows the content, first copy the important pages to a safe place (for example, a new notebook on your device), and only then sign out and sign back in with the correct university account. Please don’t uninstall OneNote or delete the notebook from the list until you are sure your data is saved.
- Contact your university’s IT department right away. If your university account’s status has changed or its license was removed, only your school’s administrator can check and restore it. Recovering OneDrive data is usually only possible within a retention window (some sources mention 30 or 93 days, depending on the type and settings), so it’s best to reach out soon. Please tell them that you can still sign in but can’t open the notebook, and include the error message.
To help narrow it down, could you let me know:
- Which app are you using to open the notebook (OneNote on your computer, on the web, or on your phone), and does the error happen in all of them?
- Where is the notebook stored: in your university account’s OneDrive, in SharePoint or Teams, or in a personal account?
- Can you open other files in your university account’s OneDrive, and does the notebook appear in the file list?
- Has anything changed recently (a password change, a new academic year or course, an email change, or an upcoming graduation)?
I hope you get your notes back soon. Please let me know the result.
