I have owned a MacBook for a couple years and have been using Word. Today I opened Word and was met with a message that I have to pay a subscription. I called Apple and after checking a few things they said it's a Microsoft thing. I honestly thought Word was an app included with the MacBook. Anyone familiar, please advise.

    OS Tahoe 26.5.2.

Thanks. It is best to update macOS first, as Bob suggested.

You can install Office 16.114.3 from the update history page at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac.

If your Office product is Office 2021, there was a problem with 16.114.1 and 16.114.2 and it should be fixed in 16.114.3, according to the release notes at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/release-notes-office-for-mac.

I'm surprised that Apple didn't point out that your installation of Tahoe [26.5.2] is seriously behind. Version 26.7.2 is the present release. Update Tahoe first then update Office as Stefan suggested... It sounds like you have Office 2021 which had issues with the 16.114.1 update.

Which version of Office is installed on your Mac? To find out, start Word, click Word on the main menu bar and then click About Microsoft Word.

Word is not included as a licensed application with a MacBook; before paying, identify the Microsoft account and Office license that previously allowed Word to work.

Check whether you already own Word

    1. Sign in to the Services & subscriptions section of your Microsoft account using each personal email address you may have used for Office.
    2. Look for either:
      • Microsoft 365 Personal or Family — a recurring subscription.
      • Office Home & Student/Home & Business 2016, 2019, 2021, or 2024 — a one-time purchase.
    3. Also consider whether Word was provided through an employer, school, or family member’s Microsoft 365 plan. In that case, access may have ended or the associated account may have been signed out.

If a license appears, open Word and choose Sign in. If no prompt appears, select File > New from Template > Sign in, then use the email address associated with that license. Word checks the account and activates when it finds a valid entitlement.^1^

If you own a one-time Office license

Check where the current Word application came from:

    1. Open App Store and review your downloaded applications, or check whether Word updates through the App Store.
    2. If this Word installation came from the Mac App Store, close all Office applications.
    3. In Finder > Applications, Control-click Word and the other installed Office applications, then select Move to Trash.
    4. Download and reinstall the matching Office version directly from the Microsoft account associated with your purchase.
    5. Open Word and sign in with that same account.

This distinction is important: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint downloaded from the Mac App Store require Microsoft 365 for editing. They cannot be activated with one-time Office 2016 or Office 2019 licenses; those licenses require Office applications downloaded directly from Microsoft.^2^

Do not delete documents from Documents, Desktop, iCloud Drive, or OneDrive when removing the application.

    If the license is missing

If Services & subscriptions shows no Office product, possible explanations include:

    • Word was activated through a different Microsoft account.
    • Access came from a former school, employer, or family subscription.
    • A trial or previous subscription expired.
    • The application was installed, but no permanent Word license was purchased.

If you still have an unredeemed product key, redeem it at office.com/setup, associate it with a Microsoft account, and then activate Word using that account.^1^

If no valid entitlement can be found, the supported purchase choices are Microsoft 365 or a one-time Office for Mac license. A subscription is therefore not the only purchase option; for example, Office Home 2024 for Mac is a one-time purchase for one Mac.^3^

If the correct license is visible but activation still fails, use the activation troubleshooting or Microsoft Support options on the Office for Mac activation page.^1^
