    1

    Open Excel.

At the top right of Excel, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognized correctly.

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, is your Office licence listed correctly there, or if that is a subscription, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

    Try these checks in order:

    1. Check whether the worksheet is protected.
      • In Excel, go to Review > Unprotect Sheet.
      • If protection was applied with a password, the password is required before editing is allowed.
      • On a protected worksheet, cells can be selected but locked cells cannot be edited.
    2. Test whether the issue happens in one workbook or all workbooks.
      • Create a new blank workbook.
      • Try typing a number into a cell and press Enter or Tab.
      • If it works in a new file, the original workbook is likely the problem.
    3. Check whether Scroll Lock is on.
      • Press Win + Ctrl + O to open the on-screen keyboard.
      • Verify that ScrLk is not enabled.
    4. Try editing directly in the cell.
      • Double-click a cell, or select the cell and press F2.
      • Then try typing the number again.
    5. If numbers are being changed automatically instead of staying as entered, format the cells as text first.
      • Select the cells.
      • In Excel for the web: Home > Number Format > Text.
      • In desktop Excel: press Ctrl+1 > Number tab > Text.
      • This prevents Excel from automatically converting entries such as dates or scientific notation.
    6. If the problem started recently and affects all spreadsheets, repair Microsoft 365.
      • A reported resolution for similar behavior was that the Microsoft 365 installation was corrupted, and reloading it solved the issue.

If invalid-entry rules were set on the sheet, Excel can also block direct typing based on data validation. On desktop Excel, invalid cells can be identified from Data > Data Validation > Circle Invalid Data.
