    Hello R D,

This issue may happen when OneDrive has not finished syncing or cannot update the original cloud file.

First, please make sure OneDrive has fully finished syncing and shows Up to date before testing AutoSave again. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area near the clock. If it shows Processing changes, allow it to finish. If you see Sync paused or an error, resume syncing or select the affected file for more details. Once OneDrive shows Your files are synced or Up to date, reopen the document and test AutoSave again.

Also, check that your OneDrive storage is not full, as insufficient space can prevent synchronization from completing. Sign in to OneDrive online, select the Settings gear icon, then open OneDrive settings > More settings > Storage metrics. If it is at or near the limit, delete unnecessary files and empty the OneDrive Recycle Bin, or free up additional space. Then restart the Office app and test AutoSave again.

Let me know how it goes!

Open the document from OneDrive inside Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—not from File Explorer or the recent-files list—and then turn AutoSave back on.

Reconnect the document to cloud AutoSave

    1. Preserve the current edits with File > Save a Copy.
    2. Close the original document.
    3. In the Office application, select File > Open > OneDrive – Personal.
    4. Browse to the document and open it.
    5. Turn on the AutoSave switch in the upper-left corner.

Opening a local path such as C:\Users\..., including through a recent-files shortcut, can leave AutoSave disabled even if the folder appears connected to OneDrive. Opening it through the application’s OneDrive location establishes the cloud-backed copy required by AutoSave.^1^

If the document is not listed there:

    1. Select File > Save As.
    2. Choose OneDrive – Personal. If it is absent, select Sign in or Add a Place.
    3. Choose a folder, enter a filename, and select Save.
    4. Confirm that AutoSave changes to On.

If it still requests another file or location

Check the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area:

    • Sync paused: Open the icon and resume synchronization.
    • Sign-in warning: Sign in using the same Microsoft account shown under File > Account in Office.
    • Storage or sync error: Open the warning and resolve the displayed issue.
    • No warning: Create a blank document and save it through File > Save As > OneDrive – Personal.
      • If AutoSave works for the new document, the original file is the issue. Save a new cloud copy in a current format such as .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx; older .doc, .xls, and .ppt formats do not support AutoSave.
      • If the new document also fails, the problem is with the OneDrive or Office connection rather than that individual file.^1^

Also check File > Options > Save and ensure the option to AutoSave OneDrive and SharePoint Online files by default is selected.

Reset OneDrive only if the cloud test also fails

Resetting does not delete the files, but it disconnects sync connections and causes OneDrive to perform a full synchronization.^2^

    1. Press Windows+R.
    2. Enter:
    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

    1. Select OK.
    2. Start OneDrive again from the Windows Start menu if it does not reopen automatically.
    3. Wait for synchronization to finish, then reopen the document through File > Open > OneDrive – Personal.

AutoSave also requires an active Microsoft 365 subscription. Without one, use Ctrl+S for normal saving; AutoRecover provides crash recovery but is not continuous cloud AutoSave.^1^
