Charges on September 28 and October 28 are one month apart, so first compare them with the subscription’s billing frequency and order history—if it is billed monthly, these are likely two consecutive renewals rather than the same payment taken twice.
Check the charges
- Sign in to your Microsoft account’s Order history and locate both $40.77 transactions.
- Check the Services & subscriptions page and review:
- The subscription name.
- Whether billing is monthly.
- The next charge date and amount.
- If both payments appear under one monthly subscription, review the previous 90 days of bank statements and order history. Microsoft notes that a late payment and the next scheduled payment can also appear close together.^1^
- If only one charge appears in order history, open Payment options and select Investigate. This can identify another Microsoft account—possibly belonging to a family member—that uses the same card.^1^
Stop future billing or request a refund
If one charge belongs to an unwanted Microsoft 365 subscription:
- Sign in to Services & subscriptions using the Microsoft account that owns it.
- Find the subscription and select Manage.
- Select Cancel or Turn off recurring billing.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options | Microsoft Support")
Microsoft generally permits a refund of the most recent recurring charge when the subscription is canceled within 30 days after payment, limited to one refund per Microsoft account and subscription product. Regional rules may provide additional rights.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")
Cancellation can reduce Microsoft 365 and OneDrive benefits, so verify that you are canceling the unwanted subscription rather than the account currently used for Office and file storage.
If it remains unexplained
Use Microsoft’s billing-charge investigation process, then select Contact Support if the self-service investigation does not resolve it.^4^
Have these details ready, but do not post them publicly:
- Charge dates: September 28 and October 28, 2026
- Amount: $40.77 each
- Order or transaction numbers
- Last four digits of the card
If the transaction came through Apple, Google Play, or another retailer, cancellation and refund must be handled by that seller. If neither Microsoft nor another account holder recognizes the charge, contact the card issuer promptly to prevent further unauthorized payments.
