A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For a personal Microsoft account, try these checks first in Microsoft Authenticator:
- Make sure the app is unlocked on the phone.
- Turn on notifications for Microsoft Authenticator. Silent or disabled notifications can prevent the prompt from appearing.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version. Versions older than 12 months are not supported.
- Check network connectivity. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Verify the phone’s date and time are correct.
- If a VPN is enabled, disconnect it and try again.
- In Authenticator, open Settings and make sure battery optimization is turned off and notifications are enabled.
If the app shows "Authentication did not complete", these are the documented causes: app locked, silent notifications, outdated app version, network issues, incorrect device date/time, or needing a password reset.
For the sign-in problem when SMS also no longer works:
- Do not make excessive or repeated code requests, because that can temporarily block code delivery.
- Check whether the phone blocks texts from unknown numbers.
- Make sure the phone inbox is not full and the messaging app is working normally.
- If another verification method appears during sign-in, use it.
- If the account password is no longer accepted, use the account recovery flow and reset the password.
If Authenticator still fails after those steps, send logs from the app:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator
- Open the app’s top-level menu
- Select Send feedback
After that:
- For a personal account, contact Support or use the Microsoft Authenticator app forum.
- For a work or school account, reach out to the IT admin.
If repeated sign-in attempts were made, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block more attempts. In that case, wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
