Hello,

Can you please help me understand whether a migration scenario exists as below:

  • SharePoint on-premises teams sites to Microsoft Teams workspaces
  • If yes, any specific tools available for this migration?

Or when we say SP on-prem to MS Teams migration, whether that implies creating SPO Teams Site (with Teams group) and then migrating content to that site from on-premises SharePoint team sites? And, create on-prem Doc Libraries as Channels in Teams. My on-prem is SP2010.

Thanks

    Hi @Anjana R ,

You could try to use SharePoint Migration Tool to migrate SharePoint 2010 libraries to Microsoft Teams. The SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) is a free and easy to use migration solution to help you migrate content from on-premises SharePoint sites to Microsoft 365. The SharePoint Migration Tool lets you migrate lists or files from your SharePoint on-premises document libraries or from your on-premises file shares and easily move them to either SharePoint, OneDrive or Microsoft Teams in Office 365.

When you create an MS Teams team, a document library is created on SharePoint Online for this new team to store the team's shared files. You can then migrated the documents in the on-premise MS SharePoint documents library to the new document library created by the new MS Teams team.

I have recently successfully used a 3rd party tool called ShareGate to migrate on-premise SharePoint sites to SharePoint Online. This tool should be able to migrate from on premise SharePoint to MS Teams document library (which is a SharePoint Online document). You need to purchase a licence to use ShareGate.

Please note you can also link to the SharePoint Online site document library from MS Teams.
