Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2016 Datacenter wipes ALL old backups

Hi,

we have a main disk with around 200 GB and a backup disk with around 1TB capacity.

We have scheduled a daily backup and we would like to retain at least a couple of backups to be able to not only restore to yesterday but even further in case we find a mistake that happened longer than 1 day ago.

Unfortunately the behavior of the Windows Server Backup is like this:

  • Add first backup
  • Add second backup
  • ...
  • Add nth backup (does not fit on disk -> delete oldest backup -> so far so good)
  • At some point (did not figure out the pattern yet), when adding a new backup not only the oldest one(s) are deleted until enough space is there, but ALL backups are wiped -> Useless, since cleaning up only a fraction of the oldest backups would be sufficient.

I would appreciate any help on this!

I am asking because the previous questions did not yield any answers:
